[Football] Football Media Day Approaching

Briar Cliff will hold its 2008 football media day, at 3:30 p.m., Aug. 25, at Hoover Middle School. The 2008 Charger Football squad and its coaching staff will be present at that time to answer questions and provide an outlook on the upcoming season. The team will begin practice at 4 p.m. All media outlets are invited to attend.

Briar Cliff held its 2008 media day, today, at the Newman Flanagan Center on the institution's campus. The Chargers, who went 22-11 last year, were recently picked fifth in the 2008 GPAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Chargers will depart tomorrow morning for a season-opening trip to South Padre Island, Texas.

Today, we are in Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2008 GPAC Football Media Day, which is being held at the Cornhusker Marriott. Head Coach Tom Rethman, assistants Kyle Langhoff and Floyd Webb as well as myself made the two hour and 15 minute trek. Today is also the opening day of fall practice for the University of Nebraska, so the general consensus is that the media turnout could be thin.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) held its annual football media day, today, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The event, which featured talks by all 12 of the league's head coaches, concluded with the release of the 2008 GPAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Chargers of first year head coach Tom Rethman checked in at No. 11.

[Men's Basketball] Fan Bus May Be Headed to South Bend

The possibility of a fan bus making the trip to South Bend, Indiana, in October, is currently being researched. The Briar Cliff men's basketball team will open its 2008-09 season with an exhibition game at the University of Notre Dame, Oct. 31.

[BCU] Eight BCU Athletic Teams Earn National Honor

Eight Briar Cliff University athletic programs have been honored by the NAIA as 2007-08 NAIA Scholar Teams, doubling last year's total. To qualify for the award, a team had to earn a 3.0 team grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during 2007-08 academic year, as defined by its institution.

The ninth annual Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Preseason Football Media Day will be held on Monday, August 4, in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the Downtown Cornhusker Marriott Hotel. Starting at 1 p.m., the GPAC football coaches will address the media with their 2008 outlook, followed by a question and answer period. The event will conclude with the release of the 2008 GPAC football preseason poll. In 2007, the Chargers were picked to finish 10th in the 11-team league.

The Briar Cliff University men's basketball team will open its 2008-09 season with an exhibition game at the University of Notre Dame. The game will be played at 9 p.m., Oct. 31, at the Edmund P. Joyce Center, following a football pep rally at the facility.

Michelle Schaper has been hired as Briar Cliff University's new softball coach. Schaper takes over for Heather Hupke, who resigned following her 10^th season as the Chargers' head coach to take a similar position at her alma mater.

[Women's Tennis] Boyd Named to All-Conference Squad

Briar Cliff senior Kayla Boyd earned honorable mention all-conference honors after leading the Charger tennis program this past season. Boyd produced a program-best singles record of 5-6 with a 3-4 mark against GPAC competition. Boyd was 3-3 at No. 2 singles and 2-3 at No. 3 singles. In doubles, Boyd went 3-8.

[Softball] Hupke Tabbed Region Coach of the Year

Heather Hupke has been named the 2008 NAIA Region III Softball Coach of the Year. A week ago, she was tabbed the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Softball Coach of the Year. Hupke guided the Chargers to a fifth place finish in the conference with a GPAC record of 15-9. Overall, the Chargers were 19-21. In 10 seasons as the Chargers' mentor, Hupke led the team to a record of 198-265.

[Men's Golf] Keane Earns All-Conference

BCU senior Ben Keane has been named to the 16-player 2008 GPAC Men's Golf All-Conference team. Keane tied for fourth at this spring's GPAC Men's Golf Championships, firing a two-day 148. Keane was an honorable mention selection a year ago.

[Baseball] Northwestern Ends Briar Cliff's Baseball Season

The BCU baseball season came to close with a 6-3 loss to Northwestern in the NAIA Region III Baseball Tournament, in Mayville, N.D. Red Raider ace Mihai Burlea pitched six scoreless innings and recorded eight strikeouts as the Chargers managed just seven hits in the contest. Matt Lee was the only Charger to register multiple hits in the game as he went 2-4 with a run. Eric Fox pitched four innings and surrendered two runs in the loss.

[BCU] Myres Earns Prestigious Award

Kathy Myres, the assistant for eligibility, compliance and business operations within the BCU Athletic Department, received the school's Spiritus Franciscanus Award at a recent honor conovation. The award is presented to a member of the university community who imitates and reflects the values and lives of St. Francis and St. Clare.
