Julia Ecklund, of Grand Island, Neb., has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the Chargers of Briar Cliff University next season.

"We are pleased to welcome Julia to the Charger volleyball family. With hard work and dedication, she has the potential to excel at the college level," said Briar Cliff coach, Jill Muhe.  "We are excited for the opportunity to work with her for the next four years."

Ecklund was a four-time letterwinner for the Islanders of Grand Island Senior High School, earning three in track and one in volleyball. As a senior, the 6-2 middle blocker registered 129 kills and 29 blocks in 29 matches.  She also played club volleyball for the GI Islanders (seven years) and Nebraska Gold (one year).  In track, the shot and discus thrower was a two-time district champion and state qualifier.

Aside from athletics, the National Honor Society member was an honor roll student and a four-time recipient of the Academic Letter Award and the Standard of Excellence Award.  Aside from being a Students of Grand Island Senior High Sharing Experience (SAGE) leader, she was a member of Spirit Counsel and Huligans and served as manager of the girls' basketball team. She brings a wide array of volunteer hours, including work at St. Francis Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, and the Red Cross.

The daughter of Steve and Linda Ecklund plans to major in pre-physical therapy at Briar Cliff.
