Todd Barry - Head Coach

Todd Barry is in his seventh year as the head men's basketball coach at Briar Cliff. Barry has guided the Chargers to an overall record of 116-71, and led the Chargers back to Nationals in 2008-09, earning GPAC Coach-of-the-Year honors. Prior to coaching at BCU, Barry spent four years as Wayne State College's director of athletics, Wayne, Neb. Barry also served as both Director of Athletics and head men's basketball coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, from 1990-2000. While at Northwestern, his teams compiled a 197-101 record and made five national tournament appearances (1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, and 2000). In 1992, they were the NAIA Division II National Runners-up. He coached six All-Americans and eight different NAIA All America Scholar-Athletes at Northwestern.

 

Prior to coaching at Northwestern, Barry coached and taught at Maurice-Orange City High School, from 1983 until 1990. His teams won four conference crowns (1985, 1986, 1989, 1990) and made three trips to the state tournament (1988, 1989, 1990). They won the Iowa Class 1A State Championship in both 1988 and 1989. He also had an early coaching stint at Primghar (1976-83). At the high school level, his teams produced a combined record of 203-94.

 

Barry's list of coaching honors and awards runs long. Most recently, he was inducted into the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997. At Northwestern, where he served as both athletic director and basketball coach, he was the NIAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and the NIAC Administrator of the Year in 1996. He was twice named the NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year and was given the the Maaske Award in 1992 as the Iowa Small College Coach of the Year. He was a five-time Northwest Iowa Coach of the Year and a two-time Iowa 1A Coach of the Year (1988, 1989). In 1988, he was named Siouxland Coach of the Year by the Sioux City Journal.

 

In addition to his coaching duties at BCU, Barry is a fundraiser for the Briar Cliff Athletic Association (BCAA). A lifelong community volunteer, Barry has been active in the Wayne Area Habitat for Humanity. Currently he serves on the Northwest Iowa Board for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is active in his local parish.

 

Barry holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa and master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesbury, Miss. He and his wife, Connie, have three grown daughters Danielle (Shawnee, Kan., married to JC Pfeister with two daughters Logan and Kate), Kristi (Omaha, Neb., married to John Kava with daughter Kerrigan) and Katie (Des Moines, Iowa).

Nic Nelson - Associate Head Coach
Nic Nelson is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Charger basketball program. Nelson comes to Briar Cliff from Central College, Pella, Iowa, where he was an assistant coach. During his three years at Central, he assisted in making the program competitive within the Iowa Conference and helped the Dutch to their best record and conference finish in more than a decade. Prior to Central, Nelson was a  varsity boys' basketball coach at Ogden High School, Ogden, Iowa, where he guided the Bulldogs to a record of 39-10. Following the 2003-04 season, he was tabbed as the Mid-Iowa Coach of the Year. During the 2000-01, he was the sophomore boys' coach at West High School in Sioux City, Iowa.
While attending Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, Nelson was a four year baseball letter-winner for the Mustangs. The 2001 Morningside graduate was a two-time MVP. Nelson played two years of professional baseball, including a season with the Sioux City Explorers in 2000. He prepped at Central Lyon High School, Rock Rapids, Iowa, where he was a four-sport standout. Nelson holds a master's degree in health science from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan. Aside from assisting with the basketball program, he teaches HPER classes at BCU. Nelson and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Grace and Claire.

Angelo James - Assistant Coach
Angelo James is in his first year as an assistant coach with the Chargers. Most recently, he served as an assistant football coach at North High School in Sioux City during the past five seasons. Previously, he coached baskeball at Bishop Heelan High School for eight seasons. James is a 1982 graduate of Westmar College, in Le Mars, Iowa, where he was a multi-sport athlete. As an NAIA All-American at Westmar in football, he set numerous school records. James also played basketball for the Eagles, competing against the likes of BCU Hall of Famers Roland Frazer and Mario Galvez. He has owned his own insurance agency in Sioux City for the past 15 years. James and his wife, Carla, have two sons, Angelo Jr., a senior at Wayne State College, and Marcus, who is a student at University of Northern Iowa.

Ron Schultz - Assistant Coach
Ron Schultz is in his 26th year as an assistant with the Charger basketball program. Prior to coaching under Barry, Schultz coached under legendary Briar Cliff coach Ray Nacke from 1973 to 1995. During that span the Chargers qualified for 11 national tournaments and in 1981 ranked No. 1 in the nation. He returned to the Briar Cliff basketball program five years ago. Schultz's portfolio also includes coaching freshmen football, girls' basketball and sophomore boys' basketball at Bishop Heelan High School, Sioux City, Iowa.
A Sioux City native, Schultz is a Heelan graduate and a Briar Cliff alumnus. While playing basketball at Briar Cliff, he scored the first basket in BC history and finished his playing career with 1,353 points.
In addition to coaching at Briar Cliff, Schultz is a counselor at Heelan High School in Sioux City. He and his wife, Ann, have five grown children.

Thygesen is in his first year as a student assistant with the BCU men's basketball program.  A year ago, as a freshman, Thygesen was a member of the Chargers' junior varsity team.  Thygesen is a native of Audubon, Iowa.
