Todd Barry - Head Coach

Todd Barry is in his fourth season as the Chargers' head coach.He has guided the Chargers to an overall record of 48-42 in his first three seasons, including a nineteen-win season in 2005-2006. Barry served as the head men's basketball coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa from 1990-2000. During that span, Barry's teams compiled a 197-101 record and made five national tournament appearances (1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000). In 1992, they were the NAIA Div. II National Runners-up. He coached six All-Americans and eight different NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes at Northwestern.

Prior to coaching at Northwestern, Barry coached and taught at Maurice-Orange City High School, from 1983 until 1990. His teams won four conference crowns (1985, 1986, 1989, 1990) and made three trips to the state tournament (1988, 1989, 1990). They won the Iowa Class 1A State Championship in both 1988 and 1989. He also had an early coaching stint at Primghar (1976-83). At the high school level, his teams produced a combined record of 203-94.

Barry's list of coaching honors and awards runs long. Most recently, he was inducted into the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997. At Northwestern, where he served as both athletic director and basketball coach, he was the NIAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and the NIAC Administrator of the Year in 1996. He was twice named the NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year and was given the the Maaske Award in 1992 as the Iowa Small College Coach of the Year. He was a five-time Northwest Iowa Coach of the Year and a two-time Iowa 1A Coach of the Year (1988, 1989). In 1988, he was named Siouxland Coach of the Year by the Sioux City Journal.

Prior to coaching at BCU, Barry spent four years as Wayne State College's director of athletics. Aside from his coaching duties at BCU, Barry also serves as a fundraiser for the Briar Cliff Athletic Association (BCAA).

Barry has always been involved in the community and was active in the Wayne Area Habitat for Humanity. He is a Rotary member and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) sponsor. He is also active in his local parish. He has been a guest coach or speaker at more than 50 clinics and banquets.

Barry is a 1973 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and earned his master's degree at the University of Southern Mississippi. He and his wife, Connie, are the parents of three daughters, Danielle, who lives in Kansas City with her husband, JC Pfeister, and their daughters, Logan and Kate, Kristi; who resides in Gretna, Nebraska with her husband John Kava; and Katie, who lives in Des Moines, Iowa.

Nic Nelson - Assistant Coach

Nic Nelson is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Charger basketball program. Nelson comes to Briar Cliff following three years as an assistant coach at Central College. During his three years, he helped make the program competitive within the Iowa Conference and helped the Dutch to their best record and conference finish in more than a decade. Prior to that, he spent two years as the varsity boys' basketball coach at Ogden High School. He guided the Bulldogs to a record of 39-10. Following the 2003-04 season, he was tabbed as the Mid-Iowa Coach of the Year. He spent the 2000-01 season as the sophomore boys' coach at West High School. Nelson was a four-year baseball letterwinner for the Mustangs of Morningside. The 2001 graduate was a two-time team MVP. Nelson played two years of professional baseball including a season with the Sioux City Explorers in 2000. Nelson prepped at Central Lyon High School, where he was a four-sport standout. He earned his master's degree in health science from Fort Hayes State University in 2007. Aside from assisting with the basketball program, Nelson will also teach HPER classes at BCU. Nelson, his wife Michelle and their daughter Grace reside in Sioux City.

Ron Schultz - Assistant Coach

     Ron Schultz is in his third consecutive year as an assistant coach with the Charger basketball program and 24 th overall. Schultz served as an assistant coach under legendary BCU coach Ray Nacke from 1973 until 1995. During that span, the Chargers qualified for 11 national tournaments and were ranked No. 1 in the nation in 1981.

   
     Schultz was a member of the first men's intercollegiate basketball team at Briar Cliff. A native of Sioux City and a 1966 graduate of Bishop Heelan High School, Schultz scored the first basket in BC history and went on to finish his career as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,353 points.
  
    Schultz was twice named most valuable player at Briar Cliff and also named team captain twice. Schultz led Briar Cliff in scoring as a freshman averaging 17.9 points per game. He led the Chargers in assists during three of his four seasons. Following his collegiate career, Schultz was invited to tryout with the Dallas Chaparrals of the ABA. In 1992, Schultz was inducted into the Briar Cliff Athletic Hall of Fame and his No. 12 jersey is one of only two (Rolando Frazer) to ever be retired by the school. Schultz has coached freshmen football (32 years), girls basketball (four years) and sophomore boys basketball (three years) at Bishop Heelan High School. He continues to serve as a counselor at East Middle School. Schultz and his wife, Ann, have five grown children: Brad, Steve, Mary Ann, Mike and Kevin.
Bill Geelan - Student Assistant

AT BC: In first year with Charger basketball program...will serve as a student assistant coach for the 2008-09 season.

 
HS: Nine-time letterwinner for the Raiders of Ruthven-Ayrshire (three each in baseball, football, and basketball)...All-Conference in football, basketball, and baseball for two years in a row...member of the honor roll.
  
PERSONAL: Son of Pat and Kristi Geelan...majoring in Elementary Education.
Derrick Thygesen - Student Assistant

Thygesen is in his first year as a student assistant with the BCU men's basketball program.  A year ago, as a freshman, Thygesen was a member of the Chargers' junior varsity team.  Thygesen is a native of Audubon, Iowa.
