Head Coach- 1st Season

The 2017-18 season will be Mark Svagera's first as head coach of the Charger men's basketball program after he served as assistant coach for the past six years. Svagera has helped the Cliff reach the national tournament four times with two Sweet Sixteen appearances (2011-12, 2014-15) and one Elite Eight appearance (2015-16).

Last season Svagera aided in guiding the Cliff to its third-straight NAIA national tournament appearance and the Chargers also won the GPAC regular season championship for the second consecutive year. BC went 26-8 overall on the season and 14-4 in the GPAC.

In 2015-16, Svagera helped lead the Chargers to the Elite Eight and a second consecutive NAIA national tournament appearance. He also helped guide the Cliff to a school record 32-4 mark overall and an 18-2 GPAC record. The historic run last season included the school’s first ever GPAC regular season and conference tournament championships in men’s basketball.

Svagera joined Briar Cliff in the 2011-12 season after assistant coaching at Dickinson State University for two seasons. Prior to coaching at Dickinson State, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Hastings College.

The Ralston, Neb. native began his coaching career at his alma mater, Dana College, serving as an assistant with the women’s basketball program during the 2006-07 season. Svagera graduated from Ralston High School in 2002 and graduated from Dana College in 2006. He was a four-year member of the Vikings’ basketball program and earned a bachelors’ degree in physical education from Dana, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hastings.

Assistant Coach- 1st Season

Jake Shipley is in his first year as an assistant coach at Briar Cliff. Shipley began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dakota Wesleyan for the 2014-15 season. He served as the junior varsity head coach for the Tigers and was also in charge of recruiting and scouting reports. Shipley helped the Tigers go 32-5 during his lone season with the program with DWU winning the GPAC and finishing as the national runner-up at the NAIA national tournament. Shipley then moved on to Jamestown where he was the head assistant coach for the Jimmies from 2015-17. He organized player development in the off-season and was also in charge of recruiting and scouting reports. Shipley was also co-academic coordinator and co-strength and conditioning coach. He helped guide the Jimmies to a 35-26 record in his two seasons and a 2017 conference championship.

Shipley played for Briar Cliff from 201-2013. He finished his Charger basketball career 12th on the all-time scoring list with 1,485 points after appearing in only six games as a freshman. He was a back-to-back All-American for the Cliff, earning first team honors as a junior and was honorable mention during his senior season. Shipley was also the GPAC Player of the Year and was a three-time first team all-conference player, being named to the team as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Assistant- 36th Season

Ron Schultz is currently in his 36th season as an assistant with the Briar Cliff men’s basketball program. Schultz helped guide the Cliff to the national tournament for the third consecutive year last season. Last year, Schultz helped the Chargers to a 26-8 mark and a 14-4 conference record. In 2015-16, he also helped the Chargers make an Elite Eight appearance with a school record 32-4 final record and an 18-2 GPAC record. The historic run during the 2015-16 season included the school’s first ever GPAC regular season and conference tournament championships in men’s basketball.

Schultz coached alongside NAIA and Briar Cliff Hall of Fame coach Ray Nacke for 22 years, guiding the Chargers to 11 national tournaments and a No. 1 ranking in 1981. He spent seven seasons working under Todd Barry. During that span, BCU qualified for a pair of national tournaments and climbed as a high as No. 4 in the nation.

The Sioux City native’s portfolio includes coaching freshmen football, girls’ basketball and sophomore boys’ basketball at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa. He is a Heelan graduate and a Briar Cliff alumnus. While playing basketball at Briar Cliff, he scored the first basket in Briar Cliff history and finished his playing career with 1,353 points. The 1970 Briar Cliff graduate was inducted into the BCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. He and his wife, Ann, have five grown children.
