The Briar Cliff softball team registered a conference sweep of Northwestern, in Orange City, Iowa. The Chargers posted a
1-0 shutout win in the opener, followed by a
7-2 decision in game two.
It only took three hits for the Chargers to win the game one pitcher's dual. Jessica Horton drove in Joanne Sweeney for the winning run in the fifth inning. The Red Raiders had four hits and stranded nine runners on base. Camille Cruz earned the win on the mound, striking out 10, while walking six.
The Charger bats came alive in the second game with 10 hits. Annessa Garcia (2-4) and Shelby Schmidt (2-3) each had multiple hits for the blue and gold. Reagon Anthony went 1-3 with two RBI and two runs. She also earned the win as she allowed only two runs on three hits through 3.1 innings. Cruz came on in relief and registered the save after striking out six of the dozen batters she faced.
The Chargers improved to 16-15 (10-8) with the sweep, while the Red Raiders are now 7-29 (3-17). The Chargers will play another doubleheader, tomorrow, at 5 p.m., at Dordt.
