BCU head men's basketball coach Todd Barry has announced the signing of several recruits for next season including Sioux City Bishop Heelan's Chris Karpuk, Winnebago's Aaron La Pointe, Adams Central's Zach Hunt, Gross Catholic's Tony Nelson and junior college transfer Brenton Brown.
Karpuk was a member of a Crusader basketball team which won back-to-back state championships. As a senior, Karpuk was named the team's most improved player and also garnered fourth team all-Northwest Iowa accolades from the Sioux City Journal. The 6-5 forward averaged 8.8 ppg and shot 62.7 percent from the field during the 2009-10 season. He also averaged 5.5 rpg and led the team in blocked shots. Aside from basketball, Karpuk also plays soccer for the Crusaders. The National Honor Society vice president and honor roll member is also involved in Knights of the Altar and Vis-Vita. The recipient of the CNOS Tomorrow's Leader Award plans to major in accounting and business at Briar Cliff. Both of his parents, Fred and Beth Karpuk, are graduates of Briar Cliff. "Chris is a true student-athlete, who comes from one of the top high school programs in the state of Iowa," said Barry.
The 5-11 LaPointe was a two-time all-conference basketball selection for the Indians, earning honorable mention honors as a junior and first team honors as a senior. In his final season with the program, the guard averaged 18.5 ppg, 7.6 rpg and 7.5 apg. For his efforts, LaPointe garnered honorable mention all-state honors and was recognized as an outstanding player by KTIC Radio. Aside from basketball, LaPointewas also involved in football and track. The National Honor Society member was also involved in drama, NEUB and served as a firefighter. The son of Daryl, Sr. and Pearl LaPointe is undecidedon his intended major. "We are pleased to have Aaron LaPointe join our program," said Barry. "He is a quality player and a quality young man from an up and coming program."
For three years in a row, 6-2 Hunt was an all-state honorable mention and all-conference selection. During his junior and senior years he earned all-area honors from the Hastings Tribune. The point guard led his team in assists as a senior and averaged 15.7 ppg. He finished his career with 1,096 points, a new school scoring record. Hunt also lettered in football for the Patriots of Adams Central. The son of Rod and Kim Hunt plans to major in business administration at Briar Cliff. Barry said, "Zach can play either point or off-guard. He is a scorer who handles the ball. Zach came from a very good high school program and we are pleased to have him join the Briar Cliff program."
Nelson lettered in both baseball and basketball for the Cougars of Gross Catholic in Omaha, Nebraska. As a junior,the 6-0 guardearned honorable mention all-conference and all-metro after averaging 10.0 ppg and 4.0 apg. He was also selected to the all-Waverly Tournament team, last season. Aside from playing basketball, Nelson also shined on the diamond, serving as the Cougars' starting centerfielder. The son of Kirk and Patricia Nelson plans to major in business at Briar Cliff. "Tony is an aggressive player who has a great passion for the game," said Barry. "We are pleased he is joining our basketball family."
Brown comes to Briar Cliff following two years at North Platte Community College, leading the Knights to a Region IX Div. I Championship and to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. I National Tournament, this past season. The 5-9 guard led the team in minutes played, while averaging 12.6 ppg, the third-most on a squad which produced four NCAA Div. I recruits. Brown knocked down 72 three-pointers, last season, including seven in one game. He also tallied 56 assists and 43 steals in 35 games. Aside from basketball, Brown was a named to the President's List. Prior to attending North Platte, Brown was a first team all-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference selection at Stamford High School, in Stamford, Connecticut. Brown plans to major in accounting at Briar Cliff. "Brenton will bring some quickness to our back court. He played a key role for an excellent junior college program. We look forward to him joining us." said Barry.
