Michelle Schaper has been hired as Briar Cliff University's new softball coach. Schaper takes over for Heather Hupke, who resigned following her 10th season as the Chargers' head coach to take a similar position at her alma mater."We are very excited to have Michelle join our coaching staff," said Steve Gast, Briar Cliff's Director of Athletics. "Her softball background, work ethic, and enthusiasm are impressive. We are confident she will be able to successfully build on the great foundation left by Heather."
Schaper comes to Briar Cliff from William Woods University, where she has served as an assistant coach since 2006. During those three seasons, the Owls produced a mark of 110-49 with a national tournament berth in 2006. Schaper joined the Owls' coaching staff after a four-year playing career at William Woods. She finished her career with 235 hits, 169 runs, 43 doubles, 18 homeruns, 164 RBI and a batting average of .351. Schaper was a four-time all-conference selection and a three-time all-region choice. In 2003, she earned NAIA All-America second team honors. She helped the Owls to a four-year record of 148-82 and into NAIA Tournament pool play, senior year. She earned a bachelor's of science degree in athletic training from William Woods in 2005 and recently attained her master's of education degree in athletic administration and activities.
Aside from assisting at the college level, Schaper has also served as the head softball coach at North Callaway High School for the past two seasons. Her squads produced a two-year record of 45-7 and finished second at the 2007 Missouri 3A State Softball Championships.
The Briar Cliff softball team finished the 2008 season with a record of 19-21. The Chargers finished fifth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a roster which contained only two seniors.
