For the second time this off-season, the Briar Cliff men's basketball team has had one of its incoming freshman be named the Player of the Year in their respective state. Ethan Freidel was named the South Dakota All Star Boy's Basketball Player of the Year voted on by the Sanford Pentagon and KELOLAND media group. Freidel joins fellow incoming freshman Tommy Leininger as player of the year in their state of Leininger was named the Nebraska Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year last week.

Freidel, a 6-0 guard from Tea, South Dakota, helped lead Tea Area High School to a South Dakota Class A State Championship during his senior season despite entering the tournament as a six seed. Freidel poured in 29 points in the championship game, including dropping in six triples. He averaged over 22 points a game during the season and grabbed nearly five rebounds per game. Freidel joined the 1,000-point club at Tea Area as well.

"Ethan had an outstanding senior season, capped off by winning the South Dakota Class A state championship," stated Briar Cliff men's basketball head coach Mark Svagera. "He's been recognized numerous times for individual achievements, all of which are well deserved. He will be a great addition to our program as a player, but also as a quality person."

Briar Cliff will open up the 2017-18 season on October 31 with a road game at Waldorf at 7 p.m.
