The Briar Cliff men's volleyball swept Graceland (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) this evening in the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers are 6-1 in the last seven contests, bringing their record up to .500. Briar Cliff improved to 8-8 with the win, while Graceland slipped to 6-13 on the season.
Briar Cliff set the tempo early, hitting a sizzling .542 (15 kills and two errors on 24 attacks) at the clip in the first set. The Chargers only had nine errors in the match to go with 41 kills on 75 attacks to hit a .427, compared to Graceland hitting a .202 with 38 kills and 20 errors on 89 attempts. The Blue and Gold held advantages in assists (38-34), digs (26-23), blocks (9-4) and service aces (2-1).
Peyton Schirman led the Chargers with 12 kills, trailed by Karson Cruz with 11 K's. Jacob Ewart was third in kills with seven. Enrique Barajas quarterbacked the offense with 37 of the 38 BC assists. Austin Gothier paced the defense with seven digs, while Cruz rejected three attacks (one solo, two assisted). Both Cruz and Nate Saksa created a service ace in the match.
Dalton Forbes was the best attacker for the Yellowjackets with 10 kills, followed by Danny Ly with eight kills. Georgi Georgiev and Gret Hedrick each had six K's apiece. Silila Tucker dished out 29 assists and Matt Romero was the top defender for Graceland with seven digs. Tucker was credited with the lone service ace for GU.
Briar Cliff will host Dordt on Monday. Opening serve between the Chargers and Defenders is slated for 7 p.m.
