Men's Basketball - Sat, Feb. 18, 2017

For the first time since 2008 and 2009, the Great Plains Athletic Conference has a back-to-back regular season champion in men's basketball.  Briar Cliff earned that status following a 91-71 road victory over Hastings in its regular season finale.

Shane Graves led the way for the visitors, pouring in a game-high 25 points.  Jay Wolfe added 13, while Jordan Eisma and Erich Erdman tossed in a dozen apiece.  Erdman finished with a team-best five assists, while Graves had four.  Forbes had a monster game on the glass, collecting 14 caroms.  As a team, the Chargers shot 47.8 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from downtown and 81.8 percent from the line.  The Cliff was outrebounded by three, 37-34.

The Broncos shot 42.6 percent from the field, but just 21.7 percent from the land of plenty and only 50.0 percent from the charity stripe.  The Broncos had 13 turnovers in the contest, compared to just eight by the Chargers.  Pacing Hastings was Rich Williams who finished with 19 points and Bart Hiscock who added 14.  Drew Callaghan pulled down 14 caroms to go along with his seven points.

The Broncos did lead by as many as eight early in the game, but a pair of Graves' three-pointers helped to put the Chargers in front 20-19 at the 10:44 mark of the first half and the Broncos never regained the lead after that.

Hastings finished the regular season with a record of 14-16 (8-10), while the Cliff ended up 24-6 overall and 14-4 within the league.  The Chargers, winners of 10-straight and 16 of their last 18, will host the Defenders of Dordt, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the GPAC Postseason Basketball Tournament.
