For the Charger football team, a kick-off return for a touchdown was the difference between being 1-0 and 0-1. In their 2009 season-opener against the Vikings of Grand View, at Memorial Field, the Chargers fell,
27-21. Early in the fourth quarter, the Chargers scored to pull within a score of tying the game (20-14). On the ensuing kick-off, Grand View's Raytron Lamar went 68 yards for the score.
Sophomore back Stavhn Leavy had a big day for the Chargers, totaling 111 yards on 26 carries. He found the endzone twice and also led BCU with 37 yards receiving. As a team, the Chargers finished with only 108 yards on the ground. Through the air, they were held to 89 yards. Senior signal caller Ryan Hajek was 15-34 on the day and was sacked three times.
The Charger defense held the Vikings to 123 yards on the ground and 79 yards passing. Jarrod Makovicka and Calvin Christophersen led the defense in tackles with 10 apiece. Junior Eric Bolin registered nine tackles, one for loss and one of the team's two sacks. Senior Taylor Schumacher and Cecil Milton each recorded interceptions. Milton's interception was followed by a 52 return for a touchdown with 10:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. Milton's pick and score pulled the Chargers to within striking distance. Briar Cliff and Grand View then exchanged possessions until the Chargers took over on their own 36-yard line following a 30-yard punt return by junior Chase Colvin. The Chargers then worked their way down the field as the clock moved under four minutes to play. During the drive, Hajek completed a five-yard pass to senior Luke Roder on fourth a three. However, with 12 seconds left on the clock, Hajek's final pass of dropping to the ground.
Time of possession was fairly equal with Grand View earning a 31:10 to 28:50 advantage. Each team also drew four penalties during the course of the game. With the win, Grand View improved to 1-0 and picked up the second-year program's first road win. The Chargers, who stumbled to 0-1, will open their conference schedule, next Saturday night, at Memorial Field, against the Vikings of Dana.
