Briar Cliff University men's basketball coach Todd Barry has announced the addition of two more recruits for the 2009-10 season. The Chargers inked University of South Dakota transfer Jared Clement, who will also run track at Briar Cliff and West Marshall High School's Jake Shipley.
Clement comes to Briar Cliff following two years at the University of South Dakota. The 6-2 guard was a basketball redshirt as a freshman and then only ran track as a sophomore. Last winter, he helped USD's 4x400m relay team win that race at the Great West Conference Indoor Championships as well as win the overall crown. Clement also finished third in the 200m and fourth in the 60m. Outdoors, this past spring, the GWC all-academic team member helped the Coyotes to a second place team finish. His 4x400m relay team defended its indoor crown, while individually, Clement was second in the 200m and third in the 100m. His personal bests include 6.94 in the indoor 60m, 22.21 in the indoor 200m, 10.80 in the outdoor 100m and 21.62 in the outdoor 200m. Clement will have three years of basketball eligibility as well as two years of track eligibility remaining.
"We are very pleased to have Jared Clement join our basketball program," said Barry. "He will add athleticism, speed and scoring to our backcourt."
Clement was highly sought after coming out of Le Mars Community High School. He started every basketball game from his sophomore through his senior year. As a senior, he led the Lakes Conference in scoring (25.5 ppg) and earned first team Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) All-State and second team Des Moines Register All-State. While leading the state in field goals made with 240, Clement also set school records for points in a season (611) and in a career (1,509). As a junior, he averaged 23.0 ppg and was a second team INA All-State selection. The two-time first team all-Lakes Conference selection earned second team laurels as a sophomore. The multi-sport standout was also a four-year track medal winner and owns the school record in the 200m (21.7). The son of Dan and Judy Clement plans to major in pre-dentistry at Briar Cliff.
"We are very excited to have Jared join our sprints group which was the strength our program this past year," said head track coach Nate Treinen. "With the success of the returners and the talent of someone like Jared coming in, our sprint group will be very talented and deep for years to come."
The 6-7 Shipley was a three-time basketball letterwinner for the Trojans of West Marshall. As a senior, he earned first team all-state honors from the Des Moines Register and second team all-state accolades from the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA). He also garnered first team all-district, all-sub-state and all-conference honors after averaging 14.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 2.7 apg as a senior. For his efforts, Shipley was also named the NICL's Most Outstanding Player, senior year. As a junior, he earned third team INA all-state as well as first team all-conference and all-district.
"We are looking forward to Jake Shipley joining our basketball family," said BCU head coach Todd Barry. "He's a taller wing player with range. With hard work, he'll have an excellent college career."
Shipley also competed in cross country and track at West Marshall. Aside from athletics, the honor roll student was involved in National Honor Society and student council. He earned four academic letters and was also honored as an IAHSAA Academic Achievement Award recipient. The son of David and Bev Shipley plans to major in education at Briar Cliff.
Clement and Shipley join other BCU basketball recruits including Michael Collison (Iowa Falls), John Engler (St. Edmond), Alex Walker (North), Aaron Zyzda (Sergeant Bluff), Clay Pagels (Wisner-Pilger), Andy Dykstra (Sheldon), Austin Arndt (Hinton), Zach Kastantin (Dallas Center-Grimes) and Kyle Swanson (Minnesota State-Mankato)… The Chargers are coming off an outstanding 2008-09 season. The Chargers opened the season by playing Notre Dame in an exhibition game and finished the campaign by playing in the NAIA Div. II Men's Basketball National Championship. The Chargers' season came to a close with a record of 23-8.
