Briar Cliff went 1-1 on the first day of the 2009 GPAC Baseball Championship, in Hastings, Nebraska. Dakota Wesleyan defeated Briar Cliff,
3-2, but the Chargers bounced back, bouncing Morningside from the tournament with a
6-1 win over the Mustangs.
Tigers scored all three runs in the top of the seventh inning, erasing a 2-0 BCU lead. Chris Davis and David Callahan each had two hits to lead the Chargers. Dakota Wesleyan outhit Briar Cliff, 7-5. Nate Olson pitched six scoreless innings for the Chargers, allowing only four hits, while striking out nine. Charlie Benz came on to pitch the seventh and suffered the loss. The Chargers are now 23-27 overall, while the Tigers improved to 31-15.
Against Morningside, in an elimination game, the Mustangs struck first with a run in the first inning. The Chargers responded in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth with three runs in each inning. Stephen Keane picked up the win on the mound for the Chargers after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing only one run. Garrett Linhardt came on and pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit. The Chargers outhit the Mustangs, 8-6. Callahan and Jake Olivas each recorded multiple hits in the contest. The Chargers improved to 24-27, while the Mustangs' season came to a close with a record of 31-25.
The Chargers will now play eighth-seeded Sioux Falls at 11 a.m., tomorrow. The winner will play again at 4 p.m., while the loser will be eliminated.
