Rain overnight has delayed the start of the 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Tournament in Hastings, Nebraska. The 9 a.m. games will now start at 11 a.m., with the noon games moved to approximately 1:30 p.m. Sixth-seeded Briar Cliff will now play third-seeded Dakota Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m.The Chargers are 23-26 overall and were swept by the Tigers of DWU this season. The Chargers will put Nate Olson on the mound in the opener. Olson is 2-1 on the season with a 3.68 ERA. As a team, the Chargers are hitting .294, paced by Cody Davis' .396.
Nebraska Wesleyan is the top-seed in the tournament; the Prairie Wolves won the regular season championship this year with an 18-6 conference record. Nebraska Wesleyan also secured one of the league's two automatic berths into the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. Tournament host Hastings ended the season in second place with a 16-8 conference record, while Dakota Wesleyan was third with a 14-8 mark. Mount Marty is the fourth seed as the Lancers went 15-9 this spring. Midland Lutheran will be seeded fifth with a 14-10 GPAC Record. Briar Cliff, Morningside, and Sioux Falls all posted identical 13-11 league records and will be seeded sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively after the league tie-breaker rules were applied.
The GPAC tournament will be hosted by Hastings College with games to be played at Duncan Field and the Smith Complex. The GPAC tournament will be played according to the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association Eight-Team Double-Elimination Bracket.
The GPAC Tournament Champion receives an automatic berth to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. If Nebraska Wesleyan wins the GPAC Tournament, the tournament runner-up will secure the second automatic bid.
