The BCU baseball team entered today's regular season finale against crosstown Morningside on the verge of missing this year's conference tournament.  With their backs against the wall, the Chargers played some of their best ball of the season.  Behind outstanding pitching performances by Charlie Benz and Stephen Keane, the Chargers won 2-1 in nine innings and 4-0.

Benz threw a complete game for the Chargers in the opener, improving his record on the season to 6-3.  He held the Mustangs to one run on eight hits.  In the second game, Keane tossed a complete game shutout.  He allowed five hits in the contest.

Offensively, Chris Davis was the Chargers' leader against the Mustangs.  He went a combined 4-7 at the plate with an RBI and a run.  In the opener, Davis singled in his lead-off at-bat and was then driven in by Cody Davis' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.  The Chargers scored again in the bottom of the ninth as Jeremy Majeres drove in the game-winner on a fielder's choice.  In the second game, the Chargers and the Mustangs played three scoreless innings.  The Chargers then scored in each of the final three innings, scoring two in the fourth and one each in the fifth and the sixth.  David Kowal had an impressive outing, going 2-3 with a run and a pair of RBI.

With the wins, the Chargers improved their record to 23-26 overall and 13-11 in the GPAC.  The Mustangs fell to 31-23 overall and 13-11 in conference play.  Briar Cliff, Morningside and Sioux Falls finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league.  The Chargers owned the best record against the other two, giving them the No. 6 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.  The sixth-seeded Chargers will now play third-seeded Dakota Wesleyan, at noon, Thursday, at the Smith Complex, in Hastings, Nebraska.  The eight-team GPAC Postseason Tournament is a double-elimination affair.
