Briar Cliff junior Julian Gunnels finished fourth in the nation in the 133-pound division at the NAIA National Wrestling Championships, held at Sioux City's Tyson Events Center.
Gunnels, who went 4-2 at the tourney, became BCU's first all-American since Dave Pogge (133) did it in 2003 and 2004. Along the way, Gunnels upset a pair of nationally-ranked opponents and both of his losses were to NAIA No. 6 Wade Lowe of McKendree. Gunnels equaled the highest-ever finish for a Briar Cliff wrestler. Jerry Reicks finished fourth at 149 in 2000 and Deon Buhl was fourth in 199 at 141. Gunnels, a first team all-conference selection, finished the year 24-12. Freshman Brent Lowe produced a 2-2 overall mark for the Chargers at this year's national meet. Lowe finished the year with the most wins on the squad, 27-19. Jordaryl Logan, Zack Mullins and Jeff Miller finished the tournament 1-2 overall, while Sam Vice, Micah Sheffield and Travis Helmers all went 0-2.
