Salcedo signs onto the Chargers

Briar Cliff University women’s basketball coach Mike Power has announced the signing of three post players who will join the program next fall; Megan Salcedo (Marian), Christa Stewart (Glenwood) and Whitney Waechter (Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn).

The 5-11 Salcedo is currently averaging 14.2 ppg. She averaged 12.4 ppg and 6.3 rpg as a junior as she helped the Crusaders of Marian High School in Omaha, Neb. to a record of 17-7. She shot an amazing 62.2 percent from the field and earned Class A honorable mention all-state honors. She was also selected to the Metro Holiday Tournament and Newton Invitational all-tournament teams. Salcedo became a starter during her sophomore year and has started every game for the past two seasons. As a sophomore, she shot 55.3 percent from the floor and added 6.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Aside from athletics, Salcedo is also involved with National Honor Society, Big Sister Little Sister, FCA and various sports camps. Salcedo is the daughter of Al and Lisa Salcedo.

 

Stewart, a two-sport standout at Glenwood (Iowa) High School is currently averaging 19.7 ppg, 11.5 rpg.and 4.0 blocks per game for the Rams’ basketball team. A year ago, the 6-0 Stewart was named third team all-state as well as all-county, all-conference, all-district, all-Southwest Iowa and all-Western Iowa for her contributions on the basketball court. Following her sophomore campaign she was named all-county, second team all-conference and all-district and the Mills County Female Athlete of the Year. As a freshman, she was an honorable mention all-county choice. Stewart owns numerous school records including most rebounds and blocks in a game, season and career. In volleyball, Stewart earned numerous honors including honorable mention all-state as well as first team all-county, all-conference and all-district as a senior. Stewart is the daughter of Mike and Cheryl Stewart.

 

Waechter is a 10-time letterwinner for the Hawks of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (Iowa) High School (four in basketball, three each in track and volleyball). This season, she is averaging 18.1 ppg and 9.4 rpg. The 6-2 Waechter is Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s career rebound and block leader. She also owns school record for rebounds in a game (18 in 2005-06) and in a season (208 in 2005-06). Her name is atop the school’s list for free throws made (96) and attempted (147) in 2005-06. She earned second team all-conference as a sophomore and third team all-conference as a junior. She was a three-time all-conference volleyball selection, earning first team honors, senior year. Aside from athletics, Waechter is involved in National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council and flag corps. Waechter is the daughter of Steve and Rhonda Waechter.
