The top two teams in the GPAC are set to tangle today in Sioux Center, Iowa. NAIA No. 14 Briar Cliff is traveling to No. 6 Dordt for a 4 p.m. showdown.
 
CHARGER NOTES: The Chargers remain the hottest team in the GPAC, having won six-straight games. They are 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the GPAC and are coming off an 82-60 route of NAIA No. 12 Northwestern, Wednesday. On the road this season in the GPAC, the Chargers are 6-1. Their only conference road loss came at Hastings, 73-66, Dec. 10. The Chargers average only 71.1 ppg, but they hold their opponents to 65.7 ppg. As a team, the Chargers shoot 42.5 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from three-point land and 71.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Chargers get outrebounded by an average of 1.7 rpg (36.3-34.5). Jake Shipley continues to lead the Chargers and the GPAC in scoring, averaging 19.3 ppg. Shipley also leads the team with 55 three-pointers as he shoots 45.9 percent from the field and 45.1 percent from downtown. Taylor Murren tosses in 11.6 ppg and is second on the team with 53 three-pointers. As a team, the Chargers have knocked down 159 threes, the second-highest total in the GPAC. Michael Collison chips in 7.1 ppg and a GPAC-best 41 blocked shots, while Ben Sitzmann contributes6.8 ppg and team-highs of 57 assists and 33 steals. The Chargers' top two subs, Brenton Brown and John Engler, each contribute 5.5 ppg, while Engler leads the team with 5.3 rpg.
 
DEFENDER NOTES: The Defenders are 20-3 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC. They are currently half a game ahead of the Chargers in the GPAC standings. The Defenders are coming off an 83-74 victory over Morningside, Wednesday and they are a perfect 8-0 at home this season. They are averaging a GPAC-best 83.8 ppg, while holding opponents to 71.2 ppg. The Defenders shoot league-highs of 52.2 percent from the field and 42.0 percent from downtown. They also pull down 38.5 rpg (second in the GPAC), 8.7 rpg more than their opponents. Trevor Wolterstorff leads the Defenders with a scoring average of 15.9 ppg. Cliff Warner adds 13.2 ppg, while Jordan Vogel tosses in 13.1 ppg. Warner has connected on a GPAC-high 57 three-pointers this season as he shoots 45.2 percent from beyond the arc. He also leads the team with 107 assists. Austin Katje (11.3 ppg) and Chris Sievers (10.0 ppg) round out the squad's double figure scorers. The team's leading rebounder this season has been Kyle Lindbergh, who contributes 9.5 ppg and 8.0 rpg.
 
THE SERIES: Briar Cliff knocked off the Defenders, 88-83, Dec. 17, at the Newman Flanagan Center. In that game, the Defenders outshot the Chargers, 61.5 percent to 54.1 percent and outrebounded them, 32-25. The Chargers, however, only had four turnovers in the game, compared to 11 by the Defenders. Jake Shipley was the game's high scorer with 31 points. With that win, the Chargers took a 58-29 lead in the overall series. Briar Cliff has won eight of the last nine meetings with Dordt.

UP NEXT: The Chargers will travel to Crete, Neb., Wednesday, for a match-up with the Tigers of Doane. After that game, the Chargers will play their final five games of the regular season in Sioux City; four home games and a tilt at crosstown Morningside.
