The Chargers' season came to a close with a loss to Northwestern in the GPAC Tournament title game. The team's Most Valuable Player Award was given to senior Neil Rohe (Le Mars, IA). The repeat first-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) selection and 2008 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American led the team with averages of 16.1 ppg and 6.1 rpg. He finished sixth in the conference in scoring and seventh in rebounding.
One of the most prestigious team awards is the Barnabas Award. The award is named after Barnabas in the New Testament, who was always supportive and encouraging of the more known Apostles. This year's Barnabas Award recipient was senior Brock Cooper (Sioux City, IA). Cooper saw action in all 34 games and averaged 3.1 ppg and 2.1 rpg. Cooper, who collected 25 steals on the season, also earned the team's Mr. Defense award.
Junior point guard Brett Ratcliff (Webster City, IA) was named Mr. Defense, while freshman Matt Geelan (Ruthven, IA) was named the team's Most Promising Newcomer. Ratcliff started 28 games and averaged 8.3 ppg and 3.4 rpg, while earning honorable mention all-conference honors. He led the team with 114 assists (4th in the GPAC) and 45 steals (9th in the GPAC). Geelan saw action in all 34 games, averaging 16 minutes per game. He chipped in 3.9 ppg and 3.3 rpg. He shot 55.3 percent from the field and also totaled 27 assists and 20 steals.
The Charger's Chargers Awards, for taking the most charges, were given to senior Adi Cizmic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and junior Derek Mechaelsen (Kamrar, IA). Cizmic, a second team all-GPAC selection, was second on the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounding (4.8 rpg). Cizmic and classmate Kurt Webb each knocked down a team-best 58 three-pointers.
This year's Jeremy Axlund Award went to its namesake. The award will be annually handed out to a player who gives a lot to program possibly without the reward of extensive minutes. The senior from Sioux City, Iowa, saw action in only 11 games this season, but was a key part of the scout team and a constant motivator.
The team's Most Outstanding JV Players were sophomore Nathan Young (Sergeant Bluff, IA) and freshman James Larson (Greenfield, IA). Young was the junior varsity's leading scorer in nine games this past season, while Larson led the Chargers in scoring in their final two games of the season.
